Establishing
a Private Free Zone - our contribution to
the Rebuilding of Iraq
The idea of establishing Khor Al-Zubair
Private Free Zone is based on our
understanding that the rebuilding of Iraq
requires enormous quantities of industrial,
commercial, domestic goods and first of all
food.
Due to the embargo and the damages of the
last Gulf War the Iraqi industry and
agriculture are even 3 years after the war
still at its rudimentary efforts to recover.
At present the Iraqi nation is mainly
depending on imports for even their basic
needs. General industrial plants, either in
public or private sector, are not operative
or operating with reduced output. New
investments to repair and restore former
capacities are put on hold. This slow
process of economic recovery is partially
related to the fragile political structures
as well as to the poor security situation.
As a result a large unemployment figure is
effecting the social stability.
The development of Khor Al-Zubair Private
Free Zone is regarded as an attempt to
improve the economic recovery by creating a
secure and supportive industrial work
environment. It will make Iraq more
self-reliant and independent with respect to
its urgent needs. At the same time it offers
a safe place for international investors who
intend to seize the opportunity of
participating in the fast growing
marketplace in Iraq. Our free zone also
offers job opportunities to the population
in nearby villages and cities. For example a
free zone with the same area in Egypt
(Amyria FZ in Alexandria) offers jobs to
around 19,000 employees.
